WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith would love the opportunity to get in the ring with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Last Saturday night, Canelo won a twelve round unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs to unify the WBA, WBC, IBF middleweight titles.
But back in December, Canelo moved up to 168-pounds to score a third round knockout of Rocky Fielding to capture the WBA's "regular" version of the title in New York City.
After his win over Jacobs, Canelo's handlers mention Smith as a possibility in numerous interviews.
And they said Canelo would love to face Smith at Wembley Stadium in London.
Smith was able to get revenge for his older brother Paul, who suffered a stoppage loss at the hands of George Groves. Smith knocked out Groves last year to win the World Boxing Super Series super middleweight tournament.
Smith would also like to get revenge for his brother Liam, who was knocked out by Canelo in 2016.
“Anyone from middleweight to light-heavyweight probably wants that [Canelo] fight. If the fight was offered to you, it’s a fight I would love and a fight I would jump at,” Smith told Boxing News.
“It’s just me against Canelo if it does come off and I’d want to win just as much if it was against any other fighter. But after the [George] Groves fight it was nice to look back and I did get revenge for Paul [his eldest brother] and it would be nice to do it for Liam.
"Obviously [Canelo] lacks a lot of height against the taller guys of the [super-middleweight] division but he’s obviously got the ability to make up for it. [Rocky] Fielding as much as he had the size advantage, he didn’t really have the ability to match him and he didn’t really have the gameplan to use inside. He kind of let Canelo walk up and close the gap pretty easy and let his shots off. Whereas I think when you’ve got that big a size advantage you’ve got to make someone work very hard to get inside and then nullify them when they do get inside. Obviously I’ve got a massive size advantage, you’d be foolish not to try and use that."
