Mendez-Barthelemy, Truax-Ennis Kick Off ‘FNF’ Season

The 2014 season opener of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” will have a 130-pound title fight between Argenis Mendez and Rances Barthelemy in the main event, supported by a co-feature bout pitting middleweight Caleb Truax against Derek Ennis. The card will take place Jan. 3 at the Target Center in Minneapolis, according to a person involved with the card, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as the show has not yet been officially announced.

Convention Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota - Middleweight contender Caleb Truax (23-1-1, 14KOs) continues his run with a fourth round stoppage of Cerresso Fort (17-2-1, 11KOs). Truax has had a banner year in 2013. He started off with a ten round decision over hometown rival Matt Vanda in January and then pulled off an impressive sixth round stoppage of Don George in June. Truax has now won four in a row since losing a ten round unanimous decision to former champion Jermain Taylor in April 2012.

Caleb Truax vs. Cerresso Fort Set For September 21

Caleb Truax and Cerresso Fort will fight on Sept. 21 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Truax told BoxingScene.com, confirming a tweet from Tony Grygelko of Seconds Out Promotions. The bout will be for the USBA’s vacant middleweight title; Truax is ranked sixth by the organization and Fort is ranked ninth. Truax, a 29-year-old from Minnesota, is coming off a sixth-round technical knockout of Donovan George on the undercard to the June 21 episode of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.” The win brought his record to 22-1-1 with 13 knockouts. The lone loss came against Jermain Taylor in April 2012, a unanimous decision defeat that saw Truax put Taylor on the canvas in the ninth round.

Minnesota middleweight Caleb Truax will follow up his recent win over Donovan George with a Sept. 21 fight at the Minneapolis Convention Center, according to a post on the boxer’s Facebook and Twitter pages. “The USBA Middleweight title will be at stake and my opponent will be finalized this week!” he wrote. “Stay tuned!” The USBA’s belt at that weight class is vacant. The organization’s Top 15 reads: Curtis Stevens, Matvey Korobov, J’Leon Love, Andy Lee, Danny Jacobs, Caleb Truax, Fernando Guerrero, Abraham Han, Cerrosso Fort, Joe Greene, Derrick Findley, Elco Garcia, Sergio Mora, Ossie Duran, George Tahdooahnippah. Truax, 29, is coming off a sixth-round technical knockout of Donovan George on the undercard to the June 21 episode of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.”

Truax, a 29-year-old from Minnesota, is coming off a sixth-round technical knockout of Donovan George on the undercard to the June 21 episode of ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights.” The win brought his record to 22-1-1 with 13 knockouts. The lone loss came against Jermain Taylor in April 2012, a unanimous decision defeat that saw Truax put Taylor on the canvas in the ninth round. He spoke to BoxingScene.com four days afterward, saying that he feels he’s getting closer to a shot at a middleweight world title, and hoping that promoters such as Top Rank and Golden Boy took notice and will give him a bout against one of the middleweights in their stable.

Rances Barthelemy One Punches His Way to Title Shot

With a mandatory title shot on the line, 26-year old Cuban Jr. Lightweight Rances Barthelemy (19-0, 12 KO) of Miami, Florida, scored his first knockout since November 2011, with a vicious right uppercut to the body of 31-year old Fahsai Sakkreerin (39-4-1, 21 KO) of Chiang Mai, Thailand, in round two on Friday night at the Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was only the second stoppage loss of Sakkreerin’s career, the other coming in his sixth start in 2005 Both men came below the division limit of 130 lbs., Barthelemy at 128 ¾ and Sakkreerin at 129. The referee was Mark Nelson. The length of Barthelemy was evident in the first round, his 5’11 frame allowing forcing Sakkreerin to step hard with his jab to cross the distance. The Thai handled the task well, getting close enough to land some early left hooks. It turned out Barthelemy was merely getting his measure.
