Daniel Jacobs heads into hostile territory for the first defense of his secondary middleweight title. The cancer survivor-turned-champ takes on Caleb Truax - a cult favorite form Minnesota - in a scheduled 12-round bout Friday evening at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. The bout will air on Spike TV, along with a super middleweight clash between defending unbeaten titlist Anthony Dirrell and resurgent contender Badou Jack. Boxing never figured to be a part of Jacobs' recovery period after being diagnosed with and treated for osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. The life-threatening disease was no match for Jacobs, who enjoyed a triumphant ring return in Dec. '12 at Madison Square Garden, mere miles from his home in Brooklyn, New York.

There’s no question that Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions series has been a game changer. First announced in January after months of speculation of starting a league of his own, PBC hit the airwaves on March 7 with a televised doubleheader running live from Las Vegas on free-to-air NBC in primetime. Friday night will mark the fifth installment of the series, spread out over three networks (with more to come). The cards that aired on NBC and CBS represent the three most viewed boxing-related telecasts of 2015, including more than 4 million viewers tuning in for the March 7 premiere, headlined by Keith Thurman's highly entertaining - if one-sided - 12-round decision over Robert Guerrero. The show from UIC Pavilion in Chicago is the second PBC episode to air on Spike TV, with the March 13 edition regarded as the most fan-friendly to date. Such are the standards to live up to for the chief principles on this card, as Anthony Dirrell faces Badou Jack in a super middleweight title fight, while Daniel Jacobs defends his middleweight belt versus Caleb Truax.

Jacobs Willingly Embraces 'Bad Guy' Role Versus Truax

It was impossible for Daniel Jacobs to not be cast in the roll of good guy. Less than a year after suffering the lone loss of his career to date, the Brooklyn-bred boxer was forced to contend with an obstacle far more dangerous than any opponent he could ever face in the ring as he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, given a 60% chance of beating the odds. Not only did Jacobs conquer cancer, but also proved everyone wrong by triumphantly resuming his career. Five of his six comeback fights have taken place in New York since his ring return in Dec. ’12. Chief among them was his last fight, a 5th round knockout of Jarrod Fletcher to claim a secondary version of a middleweight title.

Daniel Jacobs – Just a Matter of Time

By Thomas Gerbasi - It takes a lot to leave Danny Jacobs speechless, but winning his first world title in August of last year did the trick. “It’s really kind of hard to put that moment into words because that moment was something that I dreamed about for a very long time, since I was about 14 years old,” Jacobs said this week in Chicago, site of his first WBA middleweight title defense against Caleb Truax tonight. That reaction is one shared by many first-time world titlists, especially when it comes after a failed first effort. Think of getting something you’ve wanted since you were a teenager, with all the blood, sweat and tears attached to it. But Jacobs’ story was different. Sure, he bounced back from his lone loss against Dmitry Pirog in 2010 to halt Jarrod Fletcher in five rounds last year, but it was what happened between those two bouts which makes his story all the more fascinating and even more understandable that words can’t describe what he achieved. “Three years prior, when it was all stripped away from me, all I could do was think about stepping back into the ring and becoming a champion,: he said. “For that to actually happen and for me to experience that, it still has yet to actually sink in. I consider myself a champion by just being a survivor, but as far as a boxing world champion, I still feel like I have a lot more to prove.”
