As many in the industry officially welcome Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to the super middleweight division, Caleb Plant is already thinking of ways to put together a going away party. Mexico’s Alvarez—who has won major titles in four weight divisions—has firmly planted his fighting flag at 168 pounds, which the pound-for-pound king insists is his optimal weight. It is also where he has designs on becoming the undisputed champion.

Caleb Plant may think he is the best super-middleweight in the world, but to his divisional cohort David Benavidez, he is simply a low hurdle waiting to be cleared. “I would want to get a fight with Plant first, just to get that out of the way,” Benavidez told FightHubTV, when asked whom he preferred to fight first, Plant or Canelo Alvarez. “The time is past. Billy Joe Saunders Rules Out Caleb Plant Fight, Citing Politics: It's A Waste of Breath

Billy Joe Saunders may often put himself in harebrained situations that make others question his grip on reality, but as far as the boxing business goes he is a stone-cold realist. At least that seems to be the case from the way he responded to a recent question about his thoughts on facing Caleb Plant. Both are 168-pounders, have titles in the same division (Plant the IBF, Saunders the WBO), and both are somewhat similar in style, cuties (or technicians, if you prefer) who swear by the age-old yogic mantra “Hit, but don’t get hit” as if it was gospel.

Caleb Plant wasn’t as swayed by Canelo Alvarez’s triumphant performance against Callum Smith as many fans and fighters. The unbeaten IBF super middleweight champion commended the Mexican superstar for thoroughly out-pointing a previously undefeated, legitimate super middleweight world champion. Plant was underwhelmed by Smith’s performance, though, in their 12-round, 168-pound title fight December 19 at Alamodome in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO – Two of Canelo Alvarez’s potential opponents for his likely fight early in May have vastly different styles than Callum Smith. Alvarez nevertheless expressed confidence during a post-fight press conference early Sunday morning regarding possible bouts against left-handed Billy Joe Saunders and right-handed Caleb Plant, both terrific technical fighters. England’s Saunders, the WBO super middleweight champion, and the United States’ Plant, the IBF 168-pound champ, each would provide Alvarez a chance to add one of the two remaining super middleweight titles he needs to become the undisputed champion in that division.
