BWAA to Honor Lomachenko as 'Fighter of the Year' Friday Night

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK – After Vasiliy Lomachenko weighs in late Friday afternoon for his 135-pound debut, he’ll take a short trip to a nearby venue to accept recognition for his three previous performances.

Ukraine’s Lomachenko will pick up his “Sugar” Ray Robinson Award for “Fighter of the Year” at the Boxing Writers Association of America’s 93rd annual awards dinner at The Copacabana in Manhattan.

The 30-year-old Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) made three impressive defenses of his WBO super featherweight title in 2017. The two-time Olympic gold medalist defeated Jason Sosa, Miguel Marriaga and Guillermo Rigondeaux by technical knockout because each opponent declined to continue between rounds of those respective fights.

I think he deserves it for Rigondeaux alone. I didn't expect him to make that fight look so simple.

This award is as if it's cursed. I wish Loma ignored it until after the fight.
