By Keith Idec - HOUSTON – Jermall Charlo’s hometown title defense wasn’t quite as easy or as brief as many might’ve expected. Jermall Charlo has taken notice of all the upsets that have occurred in boxing already this year. Mindful of not falling into the traps that distract heavy favorites, the WBC interim middleweight champion is determined to prevent Brandon Adams from joining Andrew Cancio, Julian Williams, Jamel Herring and Andy Ruiz Jr. on a list of sizeable underdogs who’ve won world title fights in 2019. The 29-year-old Charlo (28-0, 21 KOs) is scheduled to defend his crown against Adams in the main event of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader Saturday night at NRG Arena in Houston, Charlo’s hometown.
Jermall Charlo has been asking Al Haymon for a hometown fight for a few years. Brandon Adams (21-2, 13 KOs) was winner of season 5 of The Contender last year. Should he pull off an Andy Ruiz-type upset against Jermall Charlo (28-0, 21 KOs) at the NRG Arena on Saturday night, Adams would not be the first alum from The Contender to win a world title. Sergio Mora, Cornelius Bundrage and Ishe Smith graduated from the reality TV series to capture world titles in fights that were scheduled for more than five rounds. All the former Contenders' title reigns, however, were brief.

HOUSTON – Brandon Adams smiled wide as he stood in front of a significantly taller Jermall Charlo after they weighed in Friday afternoon. Charlo stood, stone-faced, as he stared downward, into Adams’ eyes. Charlo told Showtime’s Steve Farhood he didn’t know what to make of Adams’ unusually cheerful demeanor, but Adams assured Farhood that he isn’t merely happy to get his first world title shot Saturday night.
The stakes have now been raised, with the WBC making Jermall Charlo the full middleweight champion of the weight class. On Saturday night, he will make the first defense of that title against Brandon Adams in the main event live on SHOWTIME from NRG Arena in Houston, Texas..
