Retired Hall of Famer referee Joe Cortez has won the fight against the COVID-19 virus. Although he still remains in a hospital in Las Vegas, the Puerto Rican veteran revealed that the last two tests to detect the coronavirus were negative. The process to return home after nine weeks under the care of the doctors will begin shortly.
After an awkward year that started strong and full of promise, the recovery of boxing in the second half of COVID-ravaged 2020 often showed boxing’s best face. Fans didn’t get everything they wanted, but they got plenty of what they need. December closed strong with excellent outings from arguably the two biggest draws in the sport, Saul Alvarez and Anthony Joshua, and leading welterweight Errol Spence. The year kept it going to the last day with an excellent clash, anticipated by hardcore fans around the world, between Kazuto Ioka and Kosei Tanaka.
There is a plethora of talent in the heavyweight division and while Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin have beef to settle, Deontay Wilder remains a threat to anything that moves, and with Joe Joyce and Oleksander Usyk on the peripheries, the only fight that would stop the world for one-night only in boxing is the all-British clash for all of the belts between WBC champion Tyson Fury and WBA, IBF and WBO ruler Anthony Joshua. And it’s not just because it’s an intriguing blend of fighting styles but the clash in personalities would create a fascinating pre-fight build.
