Canelo Alvarez Inks Pact With Matchroom, Will Face Yildirim Feb. 27 On DAZN

The sport’s biggest attraction and most sought-after free agent will remain put for the time being. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has decided to remain with DAZN-USA, as a one-fight deal was struck with promoter Eddie Hearn according to sources with knowledge of ongoing talks between all parties. As previously reported by BoxingScene.com, the fight will consist of a mandatory WBC super middleweight title versus Avni Yildirim, which will take place Feb. 27 at a venue to be determined.

After a strong close to 2020, followed by a hot start to 2021, boxing basically took a couple weeks off. It’s back in the States with a solid card this weekend. For all the teeth gnashing right now about when the young guns will start facing off around lightweight, it’s starting to unfold rapidly at Jr. featherweight. 26-year old Angelo Leo (20-0, 9 KO) makes his first defense of the WBO strap facing a second straight undefeated aspirant in the class. This one is rescheduled and just as anticipated as it was the first time.

Arum: ESPN Won't Show Fights In March; Probably 2 In April; 8 Or 9 From May-July

January isn’t the only month in early 2021 within which ESPN won’t televise live boxing. Bob Arum informed BoxingScene.com that the network’s decision-makers have opted to skip boxing programming in March as well. The primary strategy behind that decision is to avoid airing boxing opposite men’s college basketball postseason games during that month, most notably the NCAA Tournament.

DAZN Makes Several Executive Changes Within The Company

Segev will join DAZN Group in the coming months from Entain (formerly GVC Holdings), a FTSE 100 sports betting and gaming company. The low-profile fights FOX aired Saturday night drew comparable viewership to the network’s previous boxing broadcasts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nielsen Media Research statistics released Wednesday indicated that the four-fight telecast drew an average of 920,000 viewers. The telecast attracted a peak viewership of 1,027,000 during the main event – super middleweight David Morrell Jr.’s third-round technical knockout of overmatched Mike Gavronski at Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.

Ioka-Tanaka U.S. Televised Options Continue To Look Bleak

Yet another major New Year’s Eve boxing card from Japan will proceed without the backing of a major stateside platform. Kazuto Ioka—the lone-ever Japanese male boxer to win titles in four weight-divisions—looks to prevent countryman Kosei Tanaka from matching that feat as they collide Thursday evening at Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo. The bout will be contested for Ioka’s junior bantamweight title, with the event airing live on TBS in Japan and on several other outlets throughout the world, including Fox Sports in Australia, Boxnation in the United Kingdom and on ESPN platforms throughout Latin America.

A One Off or a New Approach for DAZN?

Once a week, a search through the cable channel guide insures anything with boxing in the title not already set for DVR gets, well, set. Last Sunday, the guide scrub found something unexpected. The channel for InDemand pay-per-view was showing boxing a 8 PM EST Saturday night. Saturday was already looking pretty full. Showtime has an excellent card and DAZN has the return of Saul Alvarez.

Pick It: TBRB #1 Callum Smith vs. Middleweight Champion Saul Alvarez (Saturday, DAZN, 10 PM EST) - The return of arguably the biggest star in boxing is an easy pick of the week. That it matches the 30-year old Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KO) against Ring Magazine and WBA super middleweight titlist Callum Smith (27-0, 19 KO) in a serious clash is all the better.

Showtime's Chris Colbert-Jaime Arboleda Main Event Averaged 195,000 Viewers

Those that tuned in to watch Chris Colbert fight Saturday night were treated to much more entertainment than his previous televised appearance provided. According to numbers Nielsen Media Research released Tuesday, an average of 195,000 viewers watched Colbert beat Jaime Arboleda by 11th-round technical knockout in Showtime’s main event. Brooklyn’s Colbert (15-0, 6 KOs) dropped Panama’s Arboleda (16-2, 13 KOs) once late in the ninth round and three times in the 11th round at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
