By Keith Idec - ARLINGTON, Texas – Canelo Alvarez made Billy Joe Saunders do something Saturday night Saunders swore he’d never do. ARLINGTON, Texas – Billy Joe Saunders sensed that Canelo Alvarez’s recent opponents happily accepted their sizable paydays, yet they didn’t truly try to knock off boxing’s biggest star. That will not be the case Saturday night, Saunders assured his doubters, when they square off for three super middleweight titles at AT&T Stadium. Saunders swears making history and strengthening his legacy mean much more to him than the career-high purse that the unbeaten British southpaw will receive for facing arguably boxing’s best fighter, pound-for-pound, in their 12-round, 168-pound title unification fight.
The official outcome of Canelo Alvarez’s last fight against a championship-caliber, technically sound southpaw caused controversy. Alvarez edged Erislandy Lara by split decision in July 2014, but one judge, countless fans and some media members believe Lara did enough to beat Alvarez that night. Nearly seven years later, Alvarez will encounter an elite-level, left-handed technician, Billy Joe Saunders, on Saturday night for the first time since he battled Lara in a 12-round junior middleweight match at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
ARLINGTON, Texas – Billy Joe Saunders has expressed respect toward Canelo Alvarez and everything he has accomplished in boxing throughout the promotion of their fight Saturday night. That respect only goes so far, Saunders says, because the British southpaw realizes the boxer many consider the best, pound-for-pound, in the sport is far from unbeatable. According to Saunders, he has seen the Mexican legend lose at least three times, maybe four, during his ascent to superstardom.
ARLINGTON, Texas – Eddy Reynoso promised that a bigger ring won’t help Billy Joe Saunders on Saturday night. Canelo Alvarez’s trainer predicted that the determined Mexican champion will knock out Saunders in their 12-round super middleweight title unification fight at AT&T Stadium. Saunders threatened to pull out of their fight early this week unless they fought in a ring bigger than the 20-foot-by-20-foot squared circle Reynoso expected them to use.
