David Benavidez isn’t going to sit on his hands for Canelo Alvarez.

In an interview with FightHubTV, the fighters’ father and trainer, Jose Benavidez Sr., indicated that they have something of a concrete plan in place for Benavidez’s next several fights.

David Benavidez is coming off a resounding beatdown of Caleb Plant over 12 rounds at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After their fight, the 26-year-old Benavidez called out Alvarez to a showdown. Alvarez, by contrast, stopped Plant in 11 rounds in 2021.

But a Benavidez-Alvarez fight is not bound to materialize anytime soon. Alvarez, who typically fights twice a year, is set to take on London's John Ryder in May. After that, he is expected to fight Dmitry Bivol, the light heavyweight titlist from Russia, in the fall; Alvarez has been gung-ho about a rematch with Bivol ever since Bivol defeated him on points last year.

Which is to say that Benavidez won’t get a chance to fight Alvarez this year.

And that apparently is not an issue. Jose Benavidez named a slew of top 168-pounders that they are planning to face, including David Morrell, Demetrius Andrade, and possibly even middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo, who has not been in action for nearly two years but has hinted at a move up to the super middleweight limit. All of these fighters are backed by the same entity, Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.

“We already have a contract for three fights and that [consists of] Caleb Plant, David Morrell, Boo Boo (Andrade), and a possibility with Charlo,” Jose Benavidez said. “But If Charlo doesn’t get his act together—I mean, he hasn’t fought in two years, man. I’m not gonna wait here to see when he wants to fight. He’s fighting on social media and all that, but that sh!t isn’t making any money for him or for us.

“So you know, I mean, we’re gonna stay active and if we fight Canelo, good and if not, he’s gonna get stripped of his belts and I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’re going to continue with our era, our careers. We can’t be waiting for Canelo forever.

“We’re looking to fight in September and if it’s Canelo, good, if not, it’s gonna be somebody else.”
