Jose Benavidez Sr. - the father and trainer of junior middleweight contender Jose Benavidez Jr. - is putting the finishing touches on his son's preparation for a tough assignment.
Benavidez will face former two division champion Danny “Swift” Garcia in the main event of a Showtime televised tripleheader on Saturday, July 30 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Benavidez's back is against the wall, after going to lackluster draw in his last outing against Francisco Torres. It was Benavidez's first bout in over three years - after suffering a knockout loss to welterweight champion Terence Crawford.
Garcia is attempting to bounce back after suffering a twelve round decision loss to welterweight champion Errol Spence in 2020.
The elder Benavidez admits that his son not only needs to win, but he needs to win in impressive fashion to move his career forward to bigger opportunities.
“This is a tough fight. Danny Garcia is a two-division champion going up to 154 pounds and he’s a dangerous fighter. He’s accomplished a lot, but we’re training hard and doing everything that needs to be done to get the win. At the end of the day, Jose can’t just win the fight, he has to look spectacular so that he can get even bigger fights," Benavidez Sr. said.
“Training camp is always super hard. Every camp is a challenge. Fighters go through a lot of little things until we get to the day of the fight. Everything has been great with Jose and he’s had no injuries. We’re just waiting to step inside of the ring."
