Ben Davison has refused to confirm which corner he will be in on May 2 if Billy Joe Saunders gets his shot at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in Las Vegas that night.

Davison trains Saunders, the WBO super-middleweight champion, as well as having just taken over as the trainer of Josh Taylor, who defends his WBA and IBF super-lightweight titles against Apinin Khongsong, of Thailand, on the same night in Glasgow.

Having missed out on one Vegas superfight, when Tyson Fury sacked him ahead of his rematch with Deontay Wilder, it is assumed that Davison will stick with Saunders, who he has worked with on and off since 2016, but Davison said there was not a choice to be made until the Canelo-Saunders deal is actually agreed.

“As it stands it is not an issue, there is not a clash of dates,” Davison told IFLTV. “We have spoken about it.

“If I get a phone call to say it is done, we do have a clash of dates but we have things in place.

“The public think we know six weeks before. We will problem know the night before it is announced.”

Taylor tried out two trainers, Adam Booth and Davison, when he parted company with Shane McGuigan in the fallout of his split with Cyclone Promotions after his win over Regis Prograis.

The Scot had spent a few days with Booth at Merstham, Surrey, just south of London, and then worked out with Davison at Ricky Hatton’s gym on the outskirts of Manchester.

When working Davison he was living together in the same apartment as Davison and Saunders and commented on the tight team atmosphere.

But Taylor knew the Canelo fight was possible for Saunders when he chose Davison as his trainer. Davison warned against concluding that he would definitely choosing Saunders.

“It’s dangerous to assume,” Davison added. “As it stands, it is not an issue, so I won’t be discussing it.”
