•Apr 3, 2013

In the immediate aftermath of the draw between light heavyweight Tony Bellew and Isaac Chilemba on Saturday night, the “Bomber”, while proclaiming that he’d won the contest, announced: “Even [Chilemba’s trainer] Buddy McGirt, one of the most respected men in boxing, told me he thought I won.” BoxingScene caught up with McGirt to discuss the bout and he was keen to refute Bellew’s claims. “No,” he said. “I thought we [Chilemba] won it, but I’m happy with the draw” He added “Being that we’re in his [Bellew’s] home town I’m happy with the draw. He came in to enemy territory with a hostile crowd and, hey, it’s not a loss — we’re still in position”

Liverpool’s Tony “Bomber” Bellew (174lbs) failed to fire on Saturday night when meeting Malawi’s Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba (173lbs) at Liverpool’s Echo Arena in an eliminator for Chad Dawson’s WBC light-heavyweight title. Bellew was made to miss on a regular basis by Chilemba en route to a split draw — scores of 112-116, 114-114 and 116-115 from Christophe Fernandez, Fabian Guggenheim and Eddie Pappoe respectively. Bellew, now 19-1-1 (12), disagreed vehemently with the verdict, but Chilemba, 20-1-2 (9), made an equally compelling case for victory. It leaves both men in a state of limbo. Bellew has a British title fight with Bob Ajisafe pencilled in for May 25th, on the undercard of Carl Froch versus Mikkel Kessler, but their September 2010 meeting was a stinker and the rematch has about as much allure as a night with Marilyn Monroe’s remains.

Tony Bellew was left frustrated in Liverpool after a lackadaisical performance saw him draw with fellow world title contender Isaac Chilemba. The 30-year-old Scouser knew victory in this WBC light-heavyweight title final eliminator would put him in position to take on American champion Chad Dawson, who first defends his title against Adonis Stevenson in June. Bellew was unable to force that title challenge, though, with a laboured night's work in front of 7,000 partisan fans at the Echo Arena in his home city. Bellew - with a record of 19-1 with 12 early wins heading in - is ranked at number one with the WBC having steadily rebuilt since his only career defeat, which came against British rival Nathan Cleverly for the Welshman's WBO title in 2011.

By Jake Donovan - Tony Bellew pined for a rematch with Nathan Cleverly from the moment he was announced as the losing fighter in their terrific Oct. ’11 slugfest. A second dance with the unbeaten light heavyweight titlist never happened; neither, for the foreseeable moment, will a mandated shot at any other major title. Several shifts in tide led to a split decision draw between Bellew and Isaac Chilemba in their 12-round light heavyweight eliminator Saturday evening in Bellew’s hometown of Liverpool, England. Scores were 116-112 for Chilemba, 116-115 in favor of Bellew and 114-114 even. The verdict came on the heels of a split decision draw in the evening’s co-feature, a rematch between Derry Mathews and Anthony Crolla.

I remember when I first met Tony Bellew, it was 2007 and the Liverpudlian light-heavyweight was getting underway in the professional ranks. He was training under Anthony “Arnie” Farnell here in Manchester at the time and the city’s boxing community was abuzz with talk of the big-hitting, three-time ABA heavyweight champion, who had also trained as an accountant and had a reputation for being able to muster a sound bite, or three. Billy Graham, the then-trainer of Ricky Hatton, had confidently told me that the star amateur could be destined to set the pro game alight as long as he continued to work on his craft.

Bellew didn’t take his eyes off Chilemba as both men hit the scales inside the championship weight and Bellew lapped up the roar of the huge crowd as he vowed to put the Malawian to the sword tomorrow night. “I am so close to that World title that I am ready to go into the trenches,” said Bellew. “I know that at some point in this fight I am going to have to go to the wall. I already know what it takes to go there – he doesn’t. I don’t think he contemplates how hard this fight is going to be.

Tony Bellew will take refuge from the stresses and strains of family life by "smashing" Isaac Chilemba in Liverpool on Saturday. The WBC light-heavyweight title contender faces respected Malawian Chilemba at the Echo Arena in a final eliminator in his home city. Chilemba tried to pile the pressure on Bellew when the two men came face to face today, claiming his British opponent may struggle under the weight of expectation in front of thousands of supporters. Bellew laughed off such talk, though, insisting he faces more pressure at home with his young family than he will in the ring. "This isn't pressure, it's a pleasure," the 30-year-old said. "Where's the pressure in fighting in front of thousands of Scousers? I've dreamed of nights like this for years since I was a kid and first got into boxing. "Pressure for me is dealing with life on a day-to-day basis, raising three kids, schools, a new baby, people getting sick, bills. That is pressure.
