UPDATE: Showtime has informed Boxingscene.com that plans remain in place to keep the fight on its original September 8 date, despite conflicting information from local (San Antonio) promoter Leija Battah Promotions.

It looks like the welterweight title fight between Randall Bailey and Devon Alexander will have a new home, as well as a new date.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Boxingscene.com that the Showtime-televised card will now take place in San Antonio. Previous reports of the fight landing in Memphis – as told to RingTV’s Lem Satterfield by Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer – were true at the time, but a strange turn of events has the card now traveling due southwest.

The change in location means that the show will now move back two weeks to September 22, off of its original September 8 date. A scheduling conflict in the San Antonio venue forced the show to move dates in order to preserve the location, which is OK with one of the participants.

“I’m fine with whatever’s going on. Changing dates don’t matter to me,” commented Bailey, who makes the first defense of the welterweight title he won with a dramatic 11th round knockout of Mike Jones this past June.

News of the potential switch in dates and locations mean that the show will avoid conflict with a big night planned for rival network HBO. The Showtime card was going up against a show headlined by a highly anticipated matchup between lineal super middleweight king Andre Ward and light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson, who is actually dropping down in weight.

With the Showtime card potentially changing dates, Bailey is looking forward to being a fan for a night.

“Man, I’ll tell you what – if they make me fight the same time as Ward-Dawson, I’m fixing to pull a Manny Pacquiao and make people wait while I watch that,” Bailey lamented. The comment was in reference to Pacquiao opting to put his fight with Tim Bradley on hold long enough to watch Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals between the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics.

Promoter Lou DiBella – who handles Bailey and co-promotes Ajose Olusegun, who faces Lucas Matthysse in the co-feature – couldn’t offer anything definitive. “Our official stance on the fight was that we’re fine with anywhere but St. Louis.”

Local promoter Leija Battah Promotions confirmed its involvement in the show, but wasn’t prepared at the time to make an official statement.

Representatives for Showtime and Golden Boy Promotions did not return phone calls seeking comment.
