Bill Emes catches up with WBA "regular" 154-pound champion Austin Trout to discuss his upcoming defense against former three division champion Miguel Cotto.

Austin Trout is used to fighting in hostile enemy territory. He's fought in Mexico several times against Mexican fighters. In his two title fights in Mexico, he defeated the hometown fighter by a wide unanimous decision. The undefeated junior middleweight isn't shy when it comes to fighting on the road, so when he got the opportunity to defend against Miguel Cotto at the Garden in New York City, Trout didn't hesitate. Cotto routinely draws sell-out crowds at MSG and has become a fan favorite there. Though Cotto is from Puerto Rico, he might as well call the Garden home. After-all, it's the home of most of the best nights of Cotto's career.

Bill Emes catches the final press conference to Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout, who clash this coming Saturday night for the WBA "regular" junior middleweight title at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Showtime will televise the contest.

By Jake Donovan - Austin Trout knows the deal. The belt he carries and the undefeated record he possesses mattered just enough to make him an intriguing entry in the Miguel Cotto sweepstakes, but not enough to serve beyond the B-side against the Puerto Rican superstar at Madison Square Garden this weekend. Up until he was chosen by Cotto, his title and unbeaten status hardly mattered when it came to securing a big fight. Trout wasn’t even the first choice for this particular gig. Cotto was targeting a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, only for plans to fall through when the two sides couldn’t agree on several intangibles. Trout will get to walk into the ring last and also have his name announced as defending champion for the capacity crowd and Showtime-televised audience to see and hear. But make no mistake; this is a Miguel Cotto promotion until Trout can definitively prove otherwise.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Four-Time and Three-Division World Champion Miguel Cotto and unbeaten Puerto Rican prospects Jayson Velez and Jeffrey Fontanez participated in media workouts on Monday at Gleason’s Gym in New York in preparation for their upcoming fights this Saturday, Dec. 1 at Madison Square Garden with Cotto’s and Velez’s fights airing live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast). Muhammad Ali was barely four months removed from his first career loss against Joe Frazier, when he faced Jimmy Ellis, a longtime friend and sparring partner. Both fighters hailed from Louisville, with Ellis admitting his lifelong dream of beating Ali in the pro ranks. Ali’s reply was a warning that if Ellis ever “dream about beating me, he better wake up and apologize.”

Once upon a time, you couldn’t get Miguel Cotto to offer more than “I fight who they put in front of me” whenever the question surfaced of what awaited his future. These days, Cotto doesn’t even care about the fighter in from of him. “I am not thinking about Austin Trout. I’m thinking about myself,” Cotto emphatically stated when asked what he’s expecting from his next opponent. “I put myself through a tough training camp and am ready for whatever he brings to the ring on December 1.”

Miguel Cotto held court Monday afternoon for a well-attended media session at his training headquarters in Orlando, Florida. The former three-division champion is in the final stages of preparation for his December 1 showdown with unbeaten 154 lb. titlist Austin Trout. The bout airs live on Showtime from Madison Square Garden, a venue as familiar to Cotto as the Orlando training site where he held an open workout. The Puerto Rican superstar looks to be in peak condition with less than two weeks to go before his first fight back since his closely contested 12-round points loss to Floyd Mayweather in May.
