Felix "Tutico" Zabala Jr. of All Star Boxing recently spoke to BoxingScene about the future of his fighter Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (22-2-1, 19KOs).
Vazquez Jr. injured his hands in his October 6th victory against Jonathan Oquendo. Zabala said that he is healing up and should be ready to return to the ring early next year.
"Vazquez had problems with his hands in the Oquendo fight. He is resting now and should be ready to return in February," stated Zabala.
Vazquez Jr. and countryman Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28KOs) exchanged words after the fight. The two are long time rivals and there is definitely no love lost between them. Zabala said that he would love for Vazquez to move up to featherweight to face Lopez but feels that the fight needs to be built up first.
"I want that fight to happen but I think it needs a little more time. If Vazquez gets his title back and JuanMa gets a win then I think the fight would be bigger. They could fight in New York in June before the Puerto Rican Day Parade. That would be a huge fight," Zabala stated.
Lopez is currently serving a year suspension for derogatory comments made against referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. after his knockout loss to Orlando Salido. He is eligible to return to the ring next February.
