Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, clearly realizing the potential of “Pinoy Power” in boxing, plans to feature Z “The Dream” Gorres in a fight card in Mexico on September 5.
Arum told us he planned to put the talented southpaw on the undercard of the postponed bout of undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) who suffered a rib injury in training, forcing Top Rank to move his planned August 15 bout against Jason “The Hammer” Lehoullier (21-1-1, 8 KO’s) possibly to September 5.
The light middleweight Chavez is one of the fighting sons of Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez, the other being the younger Omar Chavez.
Arum said there was no decision on an opponent as yet but told us some weeks ago when he planned to sign Gorres that he was pleased to have such a good prospect in the Top Rank stable of fighters.
Arum is excited over what he described as a “really fabulous card” at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on August 15 headline by Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (21-1-, 14 KO’s) who takes on Panama’s Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion (13-3-1, 8 KO’s) in a WBA super flyweight interim title fight.
The “Pinoy Power 2 ” card will also feature undefeated Bernabe Concepcion (29-1-1, 16 KO’s) taking on WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano (36-1-1, 15 KO’s) in what Arum believes is “a really tough fight” and promising light welterweight southpaw Mark Jason Melligen (15-1, 11 O’s) of the famed ALA Gym battling 5’11” Michel Rosales (24-3, 21 KO’s) in what should be an explosive encounter.
