Olympic gold medal winner Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16KOs) is getting geared up to return to action on Saturday night in Cancun, Mexico. It will be the first fight in his career since losing, by a ninth round knockout, to WBO lightweight champion Terence Crawford. Gamboa will return against Joel Montes de Oca (18-3, 10KOs). Cancun Boxing is promoting the card.
Gamboa hopes to eventually fight for the WBC title. The Cuban boxer last fought in the lightweight division and once again fights at 135-pounds on Saturday. He wants to move down, likely to 130-pounds. The WBC champion at super featherweight is Takashi Miura of Japan. There is no fighter that he wants to face in particular but hopes to go for the green and gold belt.
"I would fight for the WBC [belt] because it is a title that I've never fought for, but I am basically not interested in [facing] any boxer in particular. I have all the [necessary] qualities as a boxer and I do not have to look for anyone, because everyone knows who Yuriorkis Gamboa is," Gamboa said to ESPN Deportes.
