Tonight in San Diego, Calif., Yunier Dorticos (15-0 15 KOs) will face Hamilton Ventura (13-0) in a battle of undefeated cruiserweights. The fight card is promoted by Bobby D Presents and will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The WBA Fedelatin and WBC Latino titles will be at stake which will provide the winner of the fight with a high ranking in both organizations. Dorticos said that he is approaching this fight like any other fight even though the stakes are a lot higher.
"I never underestimate anybody. I approach all of my fights the same. This is a great opportunity for both of us. We are both undefeated but at the end of the day I am going to come out of the fight with the win. I have been waiting for this opportunity my whole career. This fight will get me ranked in the top 15 in both the WBA and WBC. After this fight I am going to ready to fight anybody," Dorticos stated.
Dorticos is looking to become the next Cuban champion. Fellow Cubans such as Guillermo Rigondeaux and Yuriorkis Gamboa have had a lot of success recently winning titles but haven't been able to translate their sucess in the ring to the box office. Dorticos feels that fans will gravitate towards him because of his explosive style that doesn't fit the traditional Cuban boxing stereotype.
"The way that I see it is that I always try to give my best for the public, the media and the fans. I am a well rounded fighter and I am explosive. I try to put on a show. You have different styles of fighting and some of my countryman are more pure boxers but my style seems to be fan friendly. Don't get me wrong, I will always support my countrymen but I come to win and put on a great show,' Dorticos told BoxingScene.com.
Dorticos is promoted by Caribe Promotions whose stable also includes Rigondeaux and many others. Caribe Promotions Vice President Louis Fonseca feels very strongly that the boxing public will become fans of Dorticos as he gets more exposure and marches towards a world title. Fonseca believes so much in his fighter that he feels the 27-year-old will put the cruiserweight division back on the map in the United States.
"They always say how the cruiserweight division isn't an attractive division, that they aren't light heavyweights or heavyweights. We see Dorticos as the future of the division. He is young, he is smart, and he has the amateur credentials. He wants everyone to know that he is here. He was voted one of the top prospects and we have a great working plan for him in 2014. He is going to revive the cruiserweight division here in the United States and throughout the world," said Fonseca.
