Harry Yorgey has always been a tough kid, but the last few years have proven that toughness could be a ticket to greatness. Yorgey tore his ACL (the main knee tendon) in a little over two years ago. In his first fight back, in May 2004, his jaw was broken in the 2nd round and he finished the 6-round fight with a decision victory. The rust needed to be shed from Yorgey’s armour. His return bout against Mike McFail was held this weekend near his hometown of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania, in front of several hundred friends and family outdoors at Water World park. McFail has traveled to Philadelphia several times and has nearly played the spoiler in all of them, including a bout with Ivan Robinson. This would not be an easy foe for Yorgey (10-0; 5KOs), especially in his first bout in a year.
It was scheduled for 6 rounds and Harry started to control with the jab right away. McFail (156lbs) fought back and clowned some, but Harry was not taken from his game plan. When McFail would lead Harry had counterpunches ready. Yorgey caught McFail in the 3rd round and stormed inside and let it all hang out but McFail would not falter. This may have been the only show of emotion or the built up frustration from Yorgey. After not stopping McFail in the 3rd Yorgey (156 lbs) returned to smart boxing and counterpunching with sharp left hooks and the uppercut when Mike would lean in after punching. It was Yorgey all the way on the scorecards 60-54 from all three judges. Yorgey is tentatively scheduled to hit the Atlantic City ring on Sept 24th on the Klitschko vs. Peter undercard.
Super Middleweight, Saeed Hawkins remained undefeated, but he got his toughest test so far with Joshua Onyango. Hawkins got an early lead but let Onyango back into the fight and squeaked by with a one point victory on two of the judges cards. Hawkins, who may have been bothered by the lighting, which was low and horizontally beamed straight into two of the corners, wins his 9th straight.
Richard Stewart came down to Cruiserweight after going 4-1 as a heavyweight. He weighed 197 lbs, which proved to be advantageous against the 179 lbs Jason Burrell. Stewart stunned Burrell with a right and followed with a straight right to the chin, taking Burrell straight down to the canvas and ending the bout at 2:42 of the 3rd by TKO for Stewart (5-1: 4KOs).
Mark “Oak Tree” Brown got the win in his pro debut vs. Ivan “Extra Meat” Morgan. The 300 lbs Morgan has shed some pounds since his pro debut loss, but he was too slow for the sold 239 lbs Brown.
Joltin’ Joey Demalavez improved to 5-1 after winning a close decision vs. Terrance Watson, who is winless in 4, but certainly has promise if matched right.
The fight card was promoted by Peltz Boxing with Don Elbaum making the matches and Big Daddy’s Ribz and Beef and Ale of Phoenixville providing financial assistance.
