Former welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas has not yet made a firm decision about his career. The Cuban boxer revealed that he is still recovering from his eye injury and that he is taking everything in stride.
In his last ring appearance, Ugas suffered a unanimous decision loss to Mario Barrios as part of the undercard to the pay-per-view clash between Saúl “Canelo'' Alvarez and Jermell Charlo, held at the end of September in Las Vegas.
During that loss, Ugas had severe inflammation of the same right eye that caused him problems in his previous fight, a TKO loss to Errol Spence. The initial injury, a fractured orbital bone, forced the 37-year-old Ugas to be out of the ring for more than a year to fully recover.
“I don't know yet [regarding my future],” Ugas told George Ebro. “I'm still practically recovering, taking care of my eye. Let's go see what happens. I haven't made a decision yet. I have spent many years watching fighters who had a bad night, lost and then retired. After a year or two they return. When I say something, it will be something firm. If I say I'm going to fight, I'm going to fight. If I say no, I won't do it. I don't want it to be something made on impulse on a certain night."
Ugas, a man who faced difficulties of all kinds and who once saw his career in danger of being over after a couple of defeats in a row, rose from nothing with the help of Aroldis Chapman and veteran trainer Ismael Salas, to weave a good chain of victories, including a big career win over eight division champion Manny Pacquiao in 2021.
“Thank God I have been doing my job,” added Ugás. "I go to the gym in Las Vegas and all the guys treat me like a legend: 'Ugás, Ugás.' They treat me like an old man, but everything is fine. I feel good and thank God. I have done my job. I am happy with everything that has happened. Whatever happens I'm fine. If I fight or I don't fight, I'm fine."
