Sergio ‘Yeyo’ Thompson has frustratingly waited all year to cash in on his knockout win over Jorge Linares way back in March.
That opportunity finally appears well within reach. Two fights are being planned within the first four months of 2013, the latter a potential long awaited alphabet title shot.
Thompson (25-2, 23KO) enjoyed a career-best year in 2012, with the win over Linares one of four knockouts he scored on the year. The super featherweight contender returns to the ring on January 19 in Tabasco, Mexico against an opponent to be determined.
The bout will air live as part of Televisa’s ‘Sabados de Corona’ series, as well as on Fox Deportes in the United States. Also included on the card will be heavyweight Manuel Charr, who rebounded from a 4th round knockout loss to Vitali Klitschko in September to blast out Konstantin Airich in just 44 seconds last weekend.
Should Thompson emerge victorious, the plans from there will be to purse a showdown with countryman Gamaliez Diaz. The bout is being targeted for April and will serve as the first defense of the 130 lb. title Diaz won in a huge upset over Takahiro Aoh in late October.
