After a dominating twelve-round performance over former champ Ike Quartey on Saturday night in Tampa, Florida, Wright expressed his future intentions to the press.
As his dream fight stood by his side, Wright declared that he wants Oscar De La Hoya by the end of 2007. De La Hoya is Wright's co-promotional partner, using his Golden Boy Promotions company to help Wright's Winky Promotions get off the ground.
The fight will only happen if De La Hoya beats Floyd Mayweather, Jr. on May 5. Mayweather currently regarded as the best fighter in boxing, is a heavy favorite in some circles to win the fight. Wright has a Plan B, and Mayweather fits into that plan. Wright was challenged by Mayweather in 2005, but the two fighters could not agree on money. Many in the business felt that Mayweather was never serious about the fight and it was more of a publicity stunt, since at the time of the negotiations he was a junior welterweight and Wright was a full-blown middleweight.
"We definitely want Oscar. He's got to fight Floyd Mayweather and I'd love to have the winner of that just to prove I am one of the best fighters of the decade," Wright said. "Whoever wants to fight, I'm willing to fight," said the 35-year-old Wright.
"Boxing is not baseball or football. It's great for me to have my career for as long as I have - 16 or 17 years. ... I'm blessed. I want to make the most money I can and when it's time to quit, it's time to quit."
