39 Year old Juergen Braehmer held Rob Brant to an overall connect percentage of just 22.1% in his decision win.
Veteran Juergen Braehmer outboxed previously undefeated Rob Brant Saturday at the Sport- und Kongresshalle in Schwerin, Germany and advances to semi-final in the quest for the Muhammad Ali Trophy.
The judges scored it 119-109, 118-110 and 116-112 for Braehmer which sets up a semi-final against undefeated Callum Smith from Liverpool, England.
Braehmer, the 39-year-old former two-time light heavyweight world titleholder, was in total control of the fight dominating with his jab and left hand against his 12 year younger opponent.
“I showed that I can still do it at the age of 39,” said Braehmer who fought at an impressive high pace throughout all the rounds.
“I believe I can win this tournament. This is my last chance to achieve something big in boxing and I would not participate if I did not believe I could win the Muhammad Ali Trophy. Today I took the first step,” said the hometown hero with conviction in his voice.
“I have never seen Braehmer perform better than he did tonight. This was not only a victory for Juergen, but for all the 39-year-old’s out there,” said Kalle Sauerland, Comosa’s Chief Boxing Officer.
“I lost to a better a man. His timing was just perfect, credit to Braehmer. I was surprised he was that good,” said Brant.
27-year-old Callum Smith is now looking forward to fighting Braehmer.
“Braehmer fought well and used his size well against Brant,” said Smith.
“I think it will be a great fight against Braehmer and I feel confident to get the win as I think I will be the better fighter. I would like to fight in Liverpool, but I am ready to fight anywhere.”
The other World Boxing Super Series semi-final in the super middleweight division will be an all-British match between George Groves and Chris Eubank Jr.
The semi-finals will take place in early 2018.
