The World Boxing Council's Medical Advisory Board is recommending two additional weighins that are close to fight night.
Currently the WBC has a 30 day, 7 day and the official weighin. The IBF is the only sanctioning body with a same day weighin, which allows each fighter to weigh no more than 10 pounds above the contracted limit.
The WBC's Medical Advisory Board is looking to have one additional weigh-in 48 to 72 hours prior to the contest, with an undetermined maximum above the contracted limit. And the second weighin would fall on the day of the fight and have similar rules to the IBF.
The Medical Board's Chairman, Dr. Paul Wallace explained this would allow boxers to rehydrate better. He pointed out:
"Putting back liquid rapidly doesn't replace electrolytes, especially around the brain. Dehydration and rehydration may be the most significant and preventative health challenge in boxing. The WBC has implemented 30 Day and 7 day weighins prior to a WBC sanctioned fight, which on its own has not deterred boxers from having massive weight shifts, sometimes as much as 20% of the body weight in 24 hours."
