By Yuri Tarantin (Allboxing.ru)
A couple of days ago, before the sudden postponement of Wladimir Klitschko vs. Derek Chisora, an all-mighty heavyweight multi-champion spoke exclusively to Allboxing.ru about the future (possibly re-scheduled) fight with Dereck Chisora and a bit about WBA champion David Haye. Although Saturday's show in Mannheim is off, this short interview still has some relevant points to look at…
Tarantin: Wladimir, the world boxing community is curious why Derek Chisora was chosen among all the candidates? You are top-10 P4P entrant and a long-standing heavyweight king; oppositely Chisora is barely known outside the United Kingdom. Do you feel it’ll be an interesting fight? Or is it just a convenient tune-up on the eve of Christmas? Or maybe it’s a way to get an inside track to David Haye?
Klitschko: The biggest problem with heavyweight boxing nowadays is the sad absence of any bright individuals, appealing names worth fighting with, and those capable of sound achievements. However, there are a lot of talented boxers, excellent sportsmen. Derek Chisora is in that mix. He is a British champion; he has never lost a fight. I won’t underestimate him. We shall never make such the mistake. Remember Lennox Lewis in Rahman fight. Hasim Rahman was a voluntary challenger, just another stepping stone for Lewis… He was brutally punished for his underestimation of Rahman. The biggest mistake is to overestimate your power and to underestimate your opponent.
Tarantin: Was there a fighter you have ever felt aversion to? If the answer is yes, who was it and why?
Klitschko: The only boxer to piss me off was David Haye. Who the hell is he? His biggest achievement was a decision over giant Nikolay Valuev. He was running around the ring so fast that the Russian felt very giddy. Haye doesn’t choose words; he is a bore, very ill-mannered. He is a PR world champion.
Tarantin: Have you ever been nervous prior your bouts? Or, oppositely to that, are you forced to work your anger, your motivation up?
Klitschko: I’m dead calm before my fights.
Tarantin: Years without a loss and regarded as the best heavyweight around. Don’t they make you lose you focus a bit? How can you sustain a hard training camp time after time?
Klitschko: Experience allows me to avoid excess moves. Everything is checked for years to come.
Tarantin: Thank you for your time, champ!
