The date will November 20th, 2004, the fight will be rematch between Shane Mosley and Ronald "Winky" Wright. This is a win or die fight for Shane Mosley. If Shane loses again to Winky Wright, his status as a top contender could be over. Shane even dumped his trainer/father Jack Mosley and hired Joe Goosen. Shane has not looked good in many years, his last 5 fights have been disasters in one form or another. In his last 5 fights, he lost back to back to Vernon Forrest, got a no-contest against Raul Marquez, defeated Oscar De La Hoya in very disputed fashion and got dominated by Winky Wright. Winky Wright is already looking ahead to big money fights at 160 pounds with Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad. Most experts and most fans do not give Shane any shot to beat Wright and most think that Wright will have an even easier time beating Mosley.
BoxingScene caught up with Winky Wright to get his thoughts on the upcoming rematch with Shane Mosley.
BoxingScene: Winky, Shane has a new trainer, a new outlook and a new motivation. Do you think that Shane will be any different in this rematch?
Wright: I feel that the rematch will be the same as the first. I don't think Shane can fight as well at 154 as he did in the lower weights. He isnt as fast as he was, he isnt strong at 154.
BoxingScene: Some feel that you gave Shane too much respect in the first fight. Now that you saw what Shane could do, do you think you will fight more aggressive in the rematch?
Wright: I feel there will be less respect in the rematch, I was real surprised in our first fight because I expected him to be fast, to be strong, but he didnt have it.
BoxingScene: At one time, Shane was considered one of the best fighters in the world. I dont think Shane has mentally recovered from his loss to you. Do you think Shane will try to prove a point in this fight?
Wright: Yeah, I think he will try to come at me like he did in his rematch with Forrest. He's gonna try to get my respect early and prove that our first fight was a fluke.
BoxingScene: To jump ahead real quick, once your rematch with Shane is over. Is it a strong possibility that you, just like the other junior middleweights, will move up to 160 pounds?
Wright: That's a real strong possibilty. A lot of guys are moving from 154 to 160. There's plenty of fights I want at middleweight so that may be my next move.
BoxingScene: Thank you for your time Winky and good luck in November.
