If was too good to be true, Winky Wright was set to return to the ring on December 4 against unheralded Michi Munoz, ending a 17-month layoff. It was too good to be true, David Itskowitch, COO for Golden Boy Promotions, informed Dan Rafael that Wright injured his left hand during training and has pulled out per doctor's orders. The card, headed by the Wright fight, was set to be televised on the Versus network and is now canceled.
"He injured his left hand near the base of the hand near his wrist," Itskowitch said. "He hit someone on top of the head while he was sparring and the hand started swelling up. He had an MRI but I was told he has a 33 percent decrease of strength in his hand."
Wright has been inactive since a July 2007 decision loss to Bernard Hopkins. The Munoz bout was going to be a tuneup for an HBO date in early 2009.
