All fighters made weight for Tuesday’s show at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, a card topped by a 10-round scrap between featherweights Eric Hunter and Rene Alvarado.
Local-based Hunter (19-3, 10KOs) came in at 125.8 lb., while Nicaragua’s Alvarado (21-3, 14KOs) tipped the scales at 125.9 lb. Their bout airs live on Fox Sports 1, on a show presented by Golden Boy Promotions as a dedication to Bernard Hopkins-one of the greatest fighters in history to come out of the City of Brotherly Love—celebrating his 50th birthday earlier this month.
The weigh-in was held unusually late at 7:00pm ET, coming after a scheduled ‘Happy Birthday’ group sing to Hopkins. All of the fighters on the card were able to still come in at their contracted weight without controversy, making it that much more rewarding when they were able to enjoy birthday cake and other consumed refreshments.
In the televised co-feature, still-hopeful super lightweight prospect Michael Angel “The Artist” Perez takes on faded former lightweight titlist Miguel Acosta.
Perez (21-1-2, 10KOs) came in at the 140.8 lb. The Newark (N.J.) native looks to extend his unbeaten streak to eight in a row following a devastating 6th round knockout loss to Omar Figueroa in Jan. ’12 when both were undefeated lightweight prospects. Acosta (29-7-2, 23KOs)—who has lost four of his last five—weighed 139.3 lb.
Opening the show, talented teen Lamont Roach Jr. (5-0, 2KOs) embraces his first scheduled six-round contest as he takes on Herbert Quartey.
Roach Jr., fighting out of the nation’s capital of Washington D.C., clocked in at a chiseled 131.5 lb.; Quartey (12-10, 9KOs), a Ghana native coming off of a knockout loss to former 130 lb. titlist Roman Martinez exactly one month ago (come fight night) weighed 133.4 lb.
