World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has come out swinging in defense of WBC/IBF/WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin for his decision to fight IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook on September 10th at the O2 Arena in London.
Golovkin settled on Brook, who moves up by thirteen pounds, when other fights fell through.
His team attempted to make a date with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. The Mexican superstar needed more time and his promoters verbally agreed to face Golovkin in September 2017.
They also tried to get WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders, who wanted a lot of money and expressed little interest in doing the fight. And then there were weeks of discussions for Chris Eubank Jr. who prevented the fight from happening after making unrealistic demands of his own promoter. That left very few options for Golovkin to choose from for the fall.
"For me, he is an exemplary fighter. Right now he is one of the best fighters in the world and tries to fight three or four times a year which is something we do not see, and he is also looking to face the best. Now he's going against Kell Brook, who is an undefeated fighter and will be fighting him at the challenger's home, and that's the choice that he had to make after so many refused to face him," Sulaiman said.
