Last Saturday night at the Los Angeles Forum in California, Thailand's Srisaket Sor Rungvisai retained his World Boxing Council title by beating challenger Juan Estrada, holding on in the later rounds to come out with a close majority decision.
Srisaket compiled a big lead by winning almost all of the first seven rounds in the 12-round super flyweight title fight. But the hard-hitting 31-year-old couldn’t get the knockout he was hoping for and even looked the more tired of the two in the final round.
Srisaket, who improved to 45-4-1 with 40 knockouts, won by a score of 117-111 on one judge’s card. Another judge had him winning 115-113 and Las Vegas judge Dave Moretti scored it a draw, 114-114.
The pair traded heavy punches in the middle of the ring on Saturday throughout the thrilling fight, especially at the end of the first and fifth rounds. Srisaket threw 879 punches overall while the challenger threw 671.
Estrada, who suffered the third loss of his career to go with 36 victories, believes he was robbed in the contest and demands that rematch takes place as soon as possible.
Promoter Tom Loeffler, who staged that event with his 360 Promotions banner, is hoping to get a rematch down for the fall and HBO is on board with the contest.
If they want to do a rematch, World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has no problem with sanctioning the fight.
"The champion has fought tough fights, which have required a great preparation as well as dedication, clearly demonstrating why he has the belt in his hands," Sulaiman said.
"The clash with Juan Francisco Estrada was a war where both delivered at their maximum and where the Mexican offered an unforgettable performance. So if he wants it, the WBC will support a second fight!
"However, this has to be decided by the promoters. For now I believe that both really deserve a break, with time to enjoy their great performance."
