The World Boxing Council has not been notified of Danny Garcia's intention to fight Paulie Malignaggi on August 1st as the headline fight of ESPN edition of Premier Boxing Champions.
Garcia has not made a defense of his WBC junior welterweight title since a twelve round decision win over Mauricio Herrera in March 2014. His next two fights, against Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson, were non-title fights that were held above the 140-pound limit A fight with Malignaggi, a former two division champion, would surely take place around the welterweight limit of 147-pounds.
Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC President, expects Garcia to make a mandatory defense against Viktor Postol.
Should Garcia go forward with a fight against Malignaggi, he may get stripped.
"What we know is that Danny Garcia has had an agreement with Postol since September of last year. They agreed that Danny would do one more fight [against Peterson] and that Postol would appear on the card and Postol would also be paid an aside step. And if both of those things happened, which they did, then the two of them were going to fight," said Sulaiman to ESPN Deportes.
"We need get confirmation of that fight [with Garcia-Malignaggi], we can not make decisions based on the press. We do not want to speculate because it would complicate the issue and we do not want to do that. We hope the fight with Postol happens."
