WBC president Jose Sulaiman claims that the handlers of light flyweight champion Brian Viloria and Top Rank are "probably just playing games with the WBC" and the world organization "cannot accept that."
Sulaiman made the comments after a reading a report that Viloria will be fighting on a Top Rank card in August in a rematch with former world champion Jose Antonio Aguirre whom he defeated by a unanimous decision last February 18.
Viloria’s manager Gary Gittelsohn and Top Rank itself informed Sulaiman that Viloria had suffered a fracture in his right hand during the Aguirre fight and was unable to honor a mandatory defense against Filipino southpaw Juanito Rubillar. The WBC ordered an interim title fight between Rubillar and No.2 ranked Wandee Singwancha.
Since no agreement was reached between the manager of Rubillar, Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde Jr and the camp of Singwancha, a purse bid was scheduled to take place today in Mexico.
Elorde said he didn’t want to fight Singwancha in Thailand because of fears of a hometown decision. At the same time he indicated he was surprised that despite claims that Viloria couldn’t train because of injury, there was video footage and photos of the champion training at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym.
Sulaiman himself said "if Viloria is medically fit and if he doesn’t make his mandatory defense he should relinquish his title."
