WBC President Jose Sulaiman says that Fernando Vargas should get prompt medical advice, following his less than convincing win.

Ferocious who’s been suffering from a bulging disc in his back, which seems to have permanently restricted his freeform style, conceded he’d blown up in weight and it’s something he’d avoid in the future. He also admitted he didn’t feel right in this fight. After all he has been out of the ring for fifteen months.

Although he decked ageing Javier Castillejo in the third, with a power laced right cross followed by two lefts, he just couldn’t apply the finishing touches before the bell, and had to settle for a dull, stiff uncharacteristic unanimous points victory after ten rounds.

Jose Sulaiman says what he saw in this fight deeply concerned him. He commented:
“Fernando Vargas must seek a very thorough medical examination. I was very, very concerned to see him fight the way he did. He was not the man that we know.

“It was clear to see that he was very weak and the end of the fight, he frankly looked to me very bad. I think he has serious physical problems that he must immediately try to check.”

And Don Jose discounted the notion for a re-match with Oscar De La Hoya, as being currently unrealistic, stating:

“I’m very worried about Fernando Vargas. I’m afraid that he is being pushed by others to continue boxing, due to his charisma and his undoubted live gate and television power. But I believe that he should be very careful for the future.”

Don Jose believes that Oscar De La Hoya, is a totally different kettle of fish. He said:
“He has not had not had any physical problems like Fernando Vargas with his back. Oscar has lost, but without any serious damage. It is a very different situation. But I hope Oscar has two more fights and then retires.”
