BoxingScene.com caught up with WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman on Saturday evening at the third annual Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony where we went over a variety of topics pertinent to the WBC's champions.
One of the topics discussed was the status of the 147 and 154 pound titles that are currently held by Floyd Mayweather who faces Andre Berto on September 12th. Mayweather will defend his 147 WBC and WBA belts at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Sulaiman said that he hasn't pushed for any mandatory challengers because his main focus was to help facilitate the long awaited Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao showdown and didn't want a mandated challenger to be a hindrance to the negotiations.
"As was discussed at the WBC Convention the main priority was to secure Mayweather-Pacquiao. That was the main priority and main interest and that is why there were no mandatories posted. We left everything open so that there wouldn't be any obstacles," said Sulaiman.
Mayeather hasn't defended his 154 pound title since he defeated Canelo Alvarez in 2013. He said that decisions regarding both titles will be made after the Mayweather-Berto fight.
"Mayweather is fighting September 12th. That is when we will address the situation. He might retire - he might not. If he isn't going to fight at 154 then we will address that but I think he deserves the time to go through this historic stage of his career and this historic era of boxing," Sulaiman told BoxingScene.com.
