Bury’s Scott Quigg was left devasted and nursing a broken jaw after dropping a split decision to Carl Frampton at a packed Manchester Arena on Saturday night.  Quigg lost both his WBA Super World title and his ‘0’ after failing to out-box or out-fight his Belfast-based rival.

Quigg has asked for a rematch, but Frampton has spoken about moving in another direction, with Leo Santa Cruz mentioned in some quarters.

If Frampton looks elsewhere, Quigg will have to work his way back into contention.  Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney offered him some words of advice after popping into the dressing room to console his fellow northerner.

“He (Rooney) told me to keep my chin up,” revealed Quigg when speaking to David Pye of the Bury Times.

“He said he had lost Champions League finals and it hurts but you have to learn from it and come back stronger.  Words like that from someone of his stature spur me on and I am grateful to him.”

The 27-year-old is now 31-1-2 (23 KOs), Eddie Hearn has told numous outlets that he will guide him back into title contention once his charge has recovered from his injury.
