Frank Warren and Bob Arum, the co-promoters for WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, are doubtful that a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk would include all of the heavyweight titles.
Uysk, who holds the WBA, IBF, IBO, WBO world titles, has already been hit with two mandatory orders. The IBF wants him to eventually defend against Filip Hrgovic, while the WBA wants Usyk to collide with "regular" champion Daniel Dubois. There is also Joe Joyce, the WBO's interim-champion, hanging over his head.
At the moment, Warren and Arum are working to finalize the full division unification between Fury and Usyk.
There is almost certainly going to be a rematch clause.
While everyone agrees that all of the major belts will be at stake in the first encounter, the second meeting is not likely to have all of the belts on the line.
“I’m not sure [about the rematch],” Warren said to Talk Sport. “I mean we haven’t got into that, but I probably think there would be [a rematch clause] because, God forbid, one of them gets a cut eye or anything goes wrong – anything can happen in boxing as we know -then there would be.
“The four belts are on the line, and the winner gets them. If there is a rematch, I don’t think then the four belts will be on the line for it cause I don’t think the governing bodies will allow it. I think they’ll just say ‘right, you’ve got to get on with your mandatories now.'”
At the moment, the fight is being targeted to take place in the first quarter of 2023.
“Well, the fighters have agreed to fight each other that’s done. Now the question is the site,” Arum told Boxing Social. “We have a couple of offers in the Middle East and we have the possibility of a huge fight at Wembley. That will be decided in the coming weeks and no matter which way it goes this will be a massive fight.
“We’ll keep the belts unified at least for this fight what happens afterwards, god knows what happens.”
