Madison Square Garden, New York City - Local favorite from Long Island “Irish” Seanie Monaghan (25-0, 16 KO’s) defeated Colombia’s Fulgencio Zuniga (27-11,1, 24 KO’s) by a 10th round TKO. Zuniga came out on the attack on the 1st round actually pushing the crowd favorite back by landed two good hooks. Monaghan, who made a quick return after his decision victory on TruTV last month, rebounded well from the 1st by being the aggressor and shooting the straight right. Monaghan landed an overhand right hand that put Zuniga on the ropes. The two traded blows to end the second round.
Monaghan kept on the offensive in the 4th round backing his opponent to the ropes, landing hard body shots while doing some slipping and ducking some headshots coming back. While the bout had good action it was Monaghan landed the more telling blows evident by the 1-2 combination that ended the 6th round and snapped Zuniga’s head back.
In the 7th Monaghan landed a big right hand causing Zuniga to clinch. The action slowed down in the 8th and the 9th as both man began to tire. The 10th came and both men exchanged blows and Zuniga went down from a punch to the back of the head but decided not to continue with 51 seconds left in the final round, giving Monaghan his 16th stoppage.
Outgoing Heavyweight prospect George Arias (4-0, 3 KO’s) stopped his opponent Eric Kason (2-3, 2 KO’s) by way of a second round destruction. Early on it was clear that Arias was going for the knockout. Big right hand after big right hand, the Bronx native derailed Cason. In the second round, Arias sent Cason to the floor and as Cason stood up the referee stopped the bout at 1:34 of round 2.
The early crowd went wild as Puerto Rican Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Diaz (11-0, 6 KO’s) defeated Marcelo Gallardo (5-3-3, 2 KO’s) of Washington by unanimous decision in a very entertaining fight. The two featherweights were involved in a mini slugfest of sorts as leather flew early and often. The two continued the pace through 3 rounds. In the 4th it changed with Diaz started to work downstairs. The body work done in the 4th round kept Gallardo from coming forward. But in the 5th it was the same scenario that happened early on, leather landing flush everywhere. Both guys noticeably gassed in the final round, but were still throwing punches - with most of them having little behind them to the final bell. The scores were 59-55, 58-56, 58-56
Camden’s Jason Sosa (16-1, 3, 12KO’s) defeated Spain’s Santiago Bustos (7-7-1) in an eight round lightweight contest. In the second round, Sosa landed a right hook that sent Bustos back to the ropes. He continued the barrage by landing another left hook that had Bustos' legs wobbly. Sosa continued the barrage through rounds 3 and 6 where he finally caught up to Bustos and dropped him. Bustos was out of it and the referee called a halt to the bout at 2:27 of the 6th round.
Maryland Prospect Mike ‘Yes Indeed Reed improved to 15-0 with 8 KO’s after defeating Puerto Rico’s Luis Gonzalez (11-2-1, 6 KO’s) by unanimous decision in a lopsided affair. After a feeling out type of first round, Reed picked up the pressure and started to press forward. Reed shot his left hand over Gonzalez jab and followed most of those combinations with hard one-two’s to the body.
Gonzalez to his credit tried catching and shooting but Reed was the quicker fighter and his reflexes showed. Reed’s straight left were pinpoint on Gonzalez’ nose and his right to the body slowed down the moving target that Gonzalez tried to be. Gonzalez tried to come on in the last round but Reed was up to the challenge stopping Gonzalez’ aggression with hard body shots right before the final bell. The scores were all in favor of Mike Reed, 80-73, 80-72, 80-72.
