Vyron Phillips is prepared to pull off an upset, by taking out former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (62-9, 45KOs) on Sunday.
The two of them will fight in the UR Fight internet pay-per-view at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.
As previously reported, Jones will be the headliner of the card, where a lucky fan would have the opportunity to win a $100,000 if they are able to beat the former champ. Fans were required to submit videos to UR Fight. The submitted video had each fan/fighter explain why UR Fight should select them to fight Jones. The selected opponent was the unknown 33-year-old MMA fighter Phillips, who has a 5-3 record in MMA.
The last time the 47-year-old Jones was in the ring, he was brutally knocked out in four rounds in December by former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli in Russia.
Timing is everything and Phillips thinks right now is the perfect time to get his hands on Jones.
“I’m very confident. I honestly think it’s my time,” Phillips, who has a 6-1 amateur boxing record, told the Sault Star. “I know he’s a great fighter, he’s a legend, but I think timing is everything. I think if this was back in the ‘90s, it would be a different story. I believe it’s my time. I believe I’m faster, I’m stronger. I believe I’m just as smart a fighter as him. I believe his time in this sport has come to an end. It’s time for him to move on.”
“I looked up to him. I wanted to be like him. I used to mimmic his style. He’s a legend and this is my dream. I can finally step in there with one of the best and test myself. That’s why I’m in the fight game, to test myself. I want to leave my legacy.”
“He’s a real solid dude, a very religious dude. Even though we’re both professionals, I’ve got to go in there and fight him, which I am, I’m going to fight my heart out, we still can be professional outside the ring. I do trash talk usually, but I’m not going to trash talk him because if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here. I know I’m supposed to lose because it would be crazy for someone like me to win. But I’m still going to win. What’s the worst that could happen, I could lose to Roy Jones Jr. I’m supposed to lose.”
