WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is battling back against the sanctioning body. Klitschko has to make a mandatory defense of his title against Juan Carlos Gomez on March 21 in Stuttgart, Germany. The WBC would issue an order that forces the winner of Klitschko-Gomez to fight Oleg Maskaev within four months - in yet another mandatory.
Klitschko has filed a complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, attempting to block the order by the WBC. Klitschko's manager, Bernd Boente, argues that normally a champion is given at least a year before making another mandatory defense.
"Normally there is a year between mandatory title defenses," Boente told German news agency SID.
The order by the WBC is ridiculous. Maskaev has done nothing to deserve a title shot. He was knocked out by Samuel Peter last March and Peter was dominated by Klitschko a few months later.
Boente would later state that his fighter is not interested in Maskaev and would like to fight David Haye or Chris Arreola in the second half of the year.
