It appears the world of politics will not keep former heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34KOs) away from the ring. According to BoxingScene.com's Tim Smith, Klitschko recently came to New York for a meeting with HBO to discuss a return to the ring on February 2.
This past January, Klitschko, 36, announced that he was going to unretire and pursue another world title. A Showtime televised fight was scheduled against Jameel McCline on Sept. 22 in Munich, Germany. The winner was guaranteed a shot at the reigning WBC champion.
Klitschko suffered a back injury during the late stages of his training camp and had to undergo emergency surgery for an acute herniated disc. The fight with McCline was initially going to be postponed to a later date, but was later cancelled when McCline signed with promoter Don King and agreed to fight on his Oct. 2 card in New York.
Less than three weeks ago in Ukraine, Klitschko announced during a press conference that he plans to run for office to become the mayor of Kiev.
“I will take part in the next elections of the mayor,” Klitschko said. “If the elections take place… all things that are happening today in the Kiev Council, happening in Kiev have cemented my thought that I should stand for this office. I will do the utmost to make Kiev a comfortable city, a green city for those, who live in it, so that it remains a historical place, doesn't lose its face.”
Klitschko has not fought since a Dec. 2004 knockout win over Danny Williams.
