The manager of WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria said yesterday that Viloria "has not resumed training" as yet following an injury to his right hand suffered in his first title defense against former champion Jose Antonio Aguirre.
Gary Gittelsohn made the statement following reports that Viloria would face Aguirre in a rematch on the July 2 Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios showdown at the Araneta Coliseum. Gittelsohn in an email to Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today said "there’s not a shred of truth to the counnt" adding that "for the life of me I have no idea where these stories come from."
Gittelsohn said he would meet with Viloria in Las Vegas since they would both we watching the bitter battle between Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga.
WBC president Jose Sulaiman had earlier offered mandatory challenger Juanito Rubillar to fight for the interim title against No.1 ranked Wandee Singwancha of Thailand but Rubillar’s manager Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde Jr said he would rather wait for Viloria to recover and fight the Fil-American.
Elorde said there is no way Viloria can give Aguirre a rematch without first getting past Rubillar otherwise he would be stripped of his title. At the same time Elorde said he didn’t believe the rematch story saying it’s a mere publicity stunt.
