At the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) pulled off a massive upset by dominating and knocking out Cristian Mijares (35-4-2, 13 KOs) in nine rounds to make history. With the win, Darchinyan is now the IBF, WBA and WBC super flyweight champion, the first fighter to unify the 115-pound weight class. Mijares was regarded as one the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

Darchinyan began to stalk in the first, Mijares would throw his jab to block Vic from getting inside with his power punches. But at the end, Darchinyan shoced the pro-Mexican crowd when he exploded and caught Mijares with an uppercut up the middle that sent him down and he almost didn't make it up. There were eight-seconds left when the action resumed, but Darchinyan couldn't finish him off as the round ended. Darchinyan continued with his hard power shots in the second, Mijares tried to get back in the fight with some punches of his own.

In the third, Mijares continued to work his way back. But Darchinyan continued to land the harder, better punches to control the action. Mijares continued to box in the fourth, Darchinyan continued to land the harder shots. The face of Mijares was swelling up by the fifth, Darchinyan was unloading more big punches. Mijares landed some good shots, and Darchinyan walked right through them. A closer sixth with both fighters having their moments. Darchinyan won most of the exchanges.

Mijares Cotinued with some better work in the seventh and eight as Darchinyan began to slow down. In the ninth, Darchinyan rallied with some hard shots to put Mijares in trouble. Moments later a massive left hand knocked Mijares out cold. The doctor ran into the ring before the ref could even finish the count.
