As previously reported, undefeated Puerto Rican fighter Felix 'Diamante' Verdejo (22-0, 15KOs) was involved in a motorcycle accident on Sunday in the jurisdiction of Rio Grande, towards Carolina. He was taken to the Medical Center in Rio Piedras.
According to preliminary data, Verdejo was riding on PR-3 road towards Fajardo to Carolina at about 5:44 pm when he lost control and fell to the pavement near a car dealership. The boxer was traveling with another motorcyclist who stopped to give assistance.
Verdejo suffered several cuts to his face and body, but nothing serious.
World Boxing Organization President Paco Valcarcel has placed a hold on Verdejo's mandatory world title shot. The World Boxing Organization recently ordered WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan to make a mandatory defense against the Puerto Rican boxer.
Both sides were given until August 20th to reach a deal. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is interested in staging Verdejo vs. Flanagan on November 5th as part of the Manny Pacquiao comeback card at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Verdejo is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow.
"The [cuts] were stitched up in the morning, and they will continue to keep him under observation an additional day. He may be discharged tomorrow (Tuesday)," said Gardy Lopez, spokesman for To Rank, to Carlos Gonzalez.
In addition, Lopez said MRI (CT Scans) tests confirmed that Verdejo has no internal bleeding.
"The examination was performed from head to toe and he has no fractures or bleeding. He only has scratches on the face and other body parts. He hopes to soon be back home," he said.
