The possibility that Felix Verdejo (19-0 and 14 KO's) will target the WBO and IBF world titles which are held by Roman 'Rocky' Martinez and Jose Pedraza is virtually none, according to the fighter's trainer and coach Ricky Marquez.
A couple of days ago, his manager told a new outlet that Verdejo is ready to fight any of the champions at 130 pounds and 135 pounds but today, when asked by us, he said that his protege would not fight another Puerto Rican.
At the present, Verdejo can seamlessly make the junior lightweight division - but there could be the possibility of chasing a lightweight title which is subject to physical growth in the coming months.
"Felix will fight at the end of February in New York and has another date in June for the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York as well. If everything goes well then he could go for a world title fight at 130 or 135 pounds. But we do not want to fight with Puerto Ricans. We want to unite people and not divide them. He talked about Terry Flanagan (WBO) and Jorge Linares (WBC)," Marquez said.
Martinez is on the agenda for a third brawl with Orlando "Siri" Salido of Mexico in the first quarter of 2016.
If Salido wins, he could very well be in the sights of Verdejo, as long as the Puerto Rican can make that weight.
"Right now he has no trouble, but we do not know in eight months. He is increasingly looking stronger with each fight and growing," Marquez said.
