Last Saturday in Puerto Rico, super bantamweight contender Jonathan Oquendo (19-2, 12KOs) has put himself in line to challenge countryman, and WBO champion, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (19-0-1, 16KOs). Oquendo knocked out Filipino Eden Sonsona in nine rounds on the Juan Manuel Lopez-Bernabe Concepcion undercard. The fight was a WBO eliminator for a future title shot.
Oquendo has some tough moments in the Sonsona fight. A clash of heads in the contest nearly closed his right eye. Sonsona landed some very good punches that Oquendo didn't see coming because of the eye. Vazquez would be his biggest fight since being stopped by Juanma in three rounds a few years ago. Juanma recently trained with Oquendo and said he improved a lot and predicted he would win a world title in the future.
When asked by Jose Sanchez about whether he plans to go after Vazquez next, Oquendo said it was up to his manager.
"I leave those type of things in the hands of my team. [My manager] Orlando Pinero will make the decision. But I'm sure of one thing, I'll put on a much better fight against Vazquez," Oquendo said.
