According to trainers Wilfredo Vazquez Sr. and Jose Bonilla, former champion Ivan Calderon should move back down to 105-pounds if he plans to continue boxing. Calderon was knocked out for the second consecutive time on Saturday night in Mexicali. Both defeats came to Giovani Segura. This time Calderon was wiped out in three quick rounds.
A week before the fight, Calderon was already walking around at the junior flyweight limit of 108-pounds. While he rehydrated to 113 on the day of the fight, the larger Segura bulked up to 121-pounds. Calderon admitted that Segura was simply too strong.
"At 108, you wll find guys like (Hugo) Cazares, who make the weight but afterwards they weigh 120-odd pounds in the ring. And that's a problem for Ivan, who depends on his speed and movement," said Bonilla to Esteban Rivera.
Vazquez Sr. agreed - "Ivan is now starting to take punches. I recommend that he goes back down to 105-pounds, where he could remain for another three years until the age of 40. At 108, there are some very strong hitters," said Vazquez.
