Interim-WBA super featherweight champion Bryan Vasquez (32-1, 17KOs), and his manager Mario Vega, are hoping that victories over tough opponents will lead to a rematch with the full champion of the division, Takashi Uchiyama, who stopped Vasquez in eight rounds a year ago. Uchiyama defends his title against Daiki Kaneko on December 31 in Tokyo.

The World Boxing Association recently ordered Vasquez and hard-hitter Javier Fortuna (23-1, 17KOs) to collide in a final eliminator. Fortuna has a return date slated for March 15th in Panama.

"Bryan [wants us] to find good fights against renowned hitters. Yes, he is fully aware that there is a risk of a taking loss, which would defeat the plans of a possible rematch [with Uchiyama]. But we have no choice but to take risks. Our ultimate goal is Uchiyama. In the first fight with him we made mistakes, learned from the loss and we will not make those mistakes again," Vega said.

Both Vasquez and Fortuna have until early January to reach an agreement, per the WBA's directive.
