After winning the vacant WBO welterweight title by stopping Sadam Ali in nine rounds on March 5th, Jessie Vargas is now in line for a big fight against Kell Brook (36-0, 25KOs) in the late summer.
BoxingScene.com first reported on Thursday that August 27th at Bramall Lane in Sheffield is the target date and location for the contest.
"I believe [a deal is in place],"he said on Friday afternoon, while in Tuscon, Arizona, where he is serving as a color commentator for CBS Sports Network.
"We settled on a number, my promoter, my manager and I. And now it's just about fixing the small details such as the flights, the rooms and how many days we'd be out there. But we agreed on the number, which is the most important thing."
Vargas, who has a record of 27-1(10 KO's) is ready to make his first title defense on the road.
Vargas admits,"I think every American fighter going into Britain, we think twice of it because of the judging that has been known to be biased, they've given the hometown fighter a huge advantage. But we asked for neutral judges, a neutral referee, as well. So with that being said, it should be a fair shot and that's all we're asking for is a 50-50 fight and it's going to be a very entertaining fight for the fans."
And stakes are high as Brook is the defending IBF champion at 147.
"Its a unification fight, it's huge and that's what we're about, we want to give the fans a great fight,"stated Vargas, who respects 'Special K'.
"I think he's a good fighter he's a good champion and we just have to put into perspective all his mistakes, all the errors he makes and capitalize on that."
