WBA 'regular' junior welterweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-0, 9KOs) is placing himself in a historic position of doubt when it comes to a fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.
There are talks taking place for Pacquiao to face WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a huge 2015 pay-per-view fight. If those discussions fall apart, Vargas' name has been mentioned as a potential Pacquiao opponent.
Vargas is seen as a huge underdog against Pacquiao. He knows the fans are overwhelmingly picking Pacquiao to beat him and Vargas wants the opportunity to prove everyone wrong.
"I believe I’m in the position that Julio Cesar Chavez was when he fought ‘Azabache’ Martinez and no one believed in him and he came out with the victory and he knocked him out. Also when Sugar Ray Leonard fought Wilfred Benitez and no one believed in Sugar Ray and that’s when a star was born. I truly believe that I’m in that position and it’s all about rising to the occasion. I hope we get this opportunity but whatever comes, we’ll be ready for," Vargas told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
